Motherhood and the Dentist – FAQ

At Rodeo Dental & Orthodontics we are excited to say that we offer our services to patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Because of this, new moms and dads often ask themselves these three questions:

“When should I start taking my baby to the dentist?”

“When should I begin formal dental care for my infant?”

“When should I begin cleaning my infant’s teeth?”

We’re here to give you the best possible advice to keep your baby’s dental health perfect!

“When should I start taking my baby to the dentist?”

We recommend bringing in your child for its first appointment as early as six months of age. It’s never too early to start preventive care, but what’s really important is to create positive, fun memories of dental experiences from an early age to avoid the notorious “fear of the dentist” later on. That’s exactly what Rodeo Dental & Orthodontics is all about! When you come on down for you first appointment with your child, we like to call it their “First Rodeo”! We believe this is a super important moment for you and your child, so we make sure to make a big deal out of it. We celebrate it with special t-shirts, colorful balloons and capture this moment in a photo so you can take this great memento home with you!

“When should I begin formal dental care for my infant?”

We urge you to get the first dental examination done before the age of 12 months! This will give us a great opportunity to notice any future dental problems and to advise you on early dental care and the best diet for cavity prevention. There are some things you can look out for by yourself! Children often develop the so-called baby bottle tooth decay which is caused by a child staying on the bottle (or breast) for too long. We always recommend that you remove the bottle as soon as your child finishes eating or falls asleep. Thumb sucking can also cause some pesky problems so it’s time to break that bad habit! This is why we recommend early dental visits and suggest that you drop by for an appointment every six months.

“When should I begin cleaning my infant’s teeth?”

As for cleaning your baby’s teeth, you should start doing that as soon as they appear! Our all-star team recommends that you clean them gently and use a soft cloth or gauze. Baby teeth are really important because they make sure all the facial functions such as chewing and speech develop properly. They also guide permanent teeth into place so it’s extremely important to keep them strong and healthy! The best way to make sure everything is going as planned is to make regular appointments at our state-of-the-art office where our expert team can give your child the dental care it needs!
