Gingival Mask

Disguise Missing Gum Tissues with a Gingival Mask

A gingival mask, also sometimes called a gingival replacement prosthesis, is a type of artificial gum. It provides dramatic cosmetic improvements in patients who have receding gums or who have lost gum tissue due to trauma.

Rodeo Dental uses gingival masks when surgical options to repair gum tissues have been exhausted, or when surgery is not desired by the patient.

How Gingival Masks Work

A gingival mask is a removable prosthetic device that is inserted into the mouth near the gum line. It mimics the look of gum tissue and hides deformities or receded gums to provide a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Gingival masks can be made from acrylic, porcelain, composite resin, or silicone-based materials. They are often used in patients who have lost gum tissue due to:

  • Gum recession
  • Trauma to the mouth
  • Periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Tooth extractions
  • Tooth loss
  • Surgical procedures

The gingival mask stays in place in the same way a contact lens stays in place – it uses moisture and contact with the lip to stay in your mouth. To make the gingival mask, your dentist will take a mold of your teeth and gums to create a device that fits you perfectly. It can then be used long-term with no negative effects on your oral health.
